(FFMM) Your Business Doesn't Have a Profit Problem. It Has a Freedom Problem.
I recently spoke with a business owner doing around $3 million in annual revenue.
Gross profit was strong.
Margins were healthy.
The business had continued growing through COVID.
On paper, everything looked fantastic.
Most people would look at that business and think, "They've made it."
But after digging a little deeper, a completely different picture emerged.
The owner was still working 10–12 hour days.
If someone called in sick, everything stopped.
He couldn't truly switch off when he travelled.
He wanted to retire in five years but admitted something that takes tremendous humility to say:
"I've failed to build a team."
That sentence is one I hear over and over again.
Not because business owners aren't capable.
Because they've become too valuable to their own business.
The business has been built around them instead of being built to run without them.
And that's the difference between owning a business... and owning a job.
The biggest mistake I see isn't poor sales.
It isn't poor marketing.
It isn't even poor profit.
It's owner dependency.
Many business owners spend years making themselves indispensable.
Then one day they realise they've built a prison with a very comfortable income.
The goal shouldn't be to become the hardest worker in the business.
The goal is to become the least essential person in the daily operation.
That's how businesses become valuable.
That's how businesses become saleable.
That's how owners get their freedom back.
One thing we discussed was hiring salespeople.
Most owners think hiring a salesperson will solve their growth problem.
Usually it creates another one.
Without systems...
Without clear KPIs...
Without coaching...
Without accountability...
Without a proven sales process...
You've simply employed someone to lose money faster.
Great salespeople don't magically appear.
They are built.
Managed.
Coached.
Measured.
Supported.
The same applies to leaders.
A team of owners will outperform a team of employees every single time.
Owners look for opportunities.
Employees look for instructions.
Creating that ownership mindset doesn't happen by accident.
It happens through leadership, daily habits, clear scoreboards, continuous improvement and giving people a genuine stake in the outcome.
Another insight from our conversation was this:
Most businesses don't need more people first.
They need better systems first.
When systems improve...
People become more productive.
Communication improves.
Waste disappears.
Decisions become faster.
The business becomes easier to scale.
Then, when new people arrive, they step into a system that already works.
That's why inside Premier Business Academy we focus so heavily on installing proven business systems before chasing growth.
Growth without systems creates chaos.
Systems create profitable growth.
Perhaps the biggest breakthrough during the conversation came when we discussed moving from Owner to Investor.
Every business owner should ask themselves one simple question:
If I disappeared for four weeks, would my business improve... or decline?
That question tells you everything.
If the business can't function without you...
You don't own a business.
The business owns you.
The owner I was speaking with has a clear goal.
Retire in five years.
Sell the business.
Enjoy life.
Travel.
Spend time doing what matters most.
That's achievable.
But not by working harder.
By building leaders.
By building systems.
By creating a culture where everyone improves every single day.
The businesses that achieve extraordinary results rarely rely on extraordinary people.
They rely on extraordinary systems executed consistently.
Here's my challenge to you.
Stop asking:
"How can I work harder?"
Start asking:
"How can I make myself less necessary?"
That's where freedom begins.
That's where business value explodes.
And ultimately...
That's where life gets a whole lot better.
Action Step
This week, identify just one task that only you currently do.
Create a simple process.
Train someone else.
Then let go.
Repeat that every month for the next year and you'll be amazed at how much freedom you've created.
Small improvements.
Massive results.
