(TMMM) Don't Confuse Distance With Freedom
Hello legends! 👋
This week I had a strategy session with one of our clients who is considering moving several hours away from his business.
He asked me a simple question...
"Can I still run my business successfully?"
My answer surprised him.
"Yes... but only if you've earned the right."
Here's the mistake I see so many business owners make...
They think freedom comes from leaving the business.
It doesn't.
Freedom comes from building a business that performs whether you're there or not.
Distance doesn't create freedom.
Systems create freedom.
The first thing I challenged him to do wasn't book the move.
It was to prove the business could run without him before he moved.
If your business can't survive while you're still in the same city...
Changing cities won't fix the problem.
It will expose it.
The next lesson was even more important...
Never rely on one superstar.
Every business has key person risk.
If one employee leaving would throw your business into chaos, you've built dependence instead of systems.
Great businesses are built around documented processes, clear expectations and simple reporting.
Not heroes.
We also discussed leadership.
If you want to lead remotely, you need more communication, not less.
Daily video updates.
Work-in-progress reports.
Variation orders approved immediately.
Weekly scoreboards.
Monthly reviews.
You can't manage what you can't see.
One of the biggest opportunities we discussed was giving his key team member a working shareholding.
Not because he'd been there the longest.
Because ownership changes behaviour.
When people think like owners, they solve problems differently.
They protect profit.
They care more about customers.
They think long term.
Finally, I challenged him not to make an emotional decision.
Before relocating, he needs to know exactly how profitable the business really is.
Get the accounts up to date.
Write down the pros and cons.
Make decisions with facts, not feelings.
The businesses that create the most freedom don't make impulsive decisions.
They make deliberate ones.
Your challenge this week...
Answer these four questions:
If I disappeared for a month, what would break?
Who am I relying on too heavily?
What systems do I need to build before I earn more freedom?
Am I making my next big decision with facts... or feelings?
Remember...
Freedom isn't created by working harder.
It's created by building systems that make you less necessary.
Have an awesome week, legends!
