TMMM: Stop Managing. Start Leading.

August 21, 20262 min read

One of the biggest growth killers in business isn't a lack of sales.

It's an owner who can't let go.

This week I had a strategy session with a business owner who had been through a very tough period personally. Like many leaders, when life got hard, the business slowed down too.

But something interesting happened.

The time away gave him clarity.

He realised he wasn't leading his team.

He was managing them.

Worse still, he was managing the managers.

If your project managers, supervisors or team leaders still need you to solve every problem, they're not really leading.

They're waiting.

And every time you jump in to rescue them, you teach them to wait even longer next time.

That's not leadership.

That's dependency.

Instead of building leaders, you're building followers.

Here are the biggest lessons from our session:

  • Lead the vision. Don't manage every task.

  • Your job is to create clarity, remove obstacles and build leaders who can think for themselves.

  • Sell internally before you sell externally.

  • The best leaders are also the best internal salespeople. Every new system, process or change needs buy-in before it gets results.

  • Morning meetings aren't a cost. They're an investment.

  • The highest-performing businesses I work with communicate every day. Problems get solved faster. Accountability increases. Rework drops dramatically.

  • During tough times, lower the bar, not the standard.

  • If you can't give 100%, give 10%. Attend the meeting. Read one page. Watch 10 minutes of training. Momentum is far easier to maintain than rebuild.

  • Invest in your people before you need them.

  • Most business owners spend thousands on equipment and almost nothing developing the people using it. The best ROI in business is often the capability of your team.

  • Training is also a filter.

  • The right people grow when you invest in them. The wrong people expose themselves quickly. Either outcome moves your business forward.

Here's the reality...

If your business only works because you're constantly involved...

You don't own a business.

You own a job with bigger overheads.

Your goal isn't to become more important.

Your goal is to become less necessary.

That's when your business starts to scale.
